Corporate Video Genres

There are many genres and subgenres of corporate filmmaking. Below is a guide to the most commonly encountered types, along with a rough outline of how they are produced.

Brand films or high-end corporate: designed to convey a story or message through a structured and engaging narrative, often with a script. These videos can use a combination of visual elements, dialogue, voiceovers, music, and sometimes text to weave a compelling story that resonates with the audience. The focus is on creating an emotional connection and delivering a memorable experience, as well as conveying a wider company message or theme. They are often costly and take longer in terms of lead times.

Interview / PTC based: long-form interview videos feature extended conversations with individuals, allowing for deep insights into their experiences, expertise, or viewpoints. These interviews provide a thorough exploration of topics through detailed questions and comprehensive answers, similar to traditional news interviews. 

Event reels / highlight reels: they primarily aim to generate excitement and highlight key moments or features in a dynamic and engaging way. They focus on creating a memorable and energetic impression through fast pacing, striking visuals and highlights. Highlights reels can also include Interviews, Pieces to Camera as well as footage filming from event. Use of lifestyle / pop tracks often elevates the film as it creates a hook that audiences can relate to. Often turned around quickly so they can be sent out the day of, or the day after.

Promos: promotional videos are designed to promote a work environment, product, brand or communicate the company's core values (as well as services) and often encourage the audience to take a specific action. They carry a specific brand whilst also fostering engagement and align employees. The message is key here, as you want the audience to carry out a specific action.

Education / Training: used to educate or train viewers on specific topics, processes, or skills, often used internally within an organisation or sometimes as customer support material or demos to business clients/customers.  To explain complex ideas, products, or services in an easy-to-understand manner. They include simplified visuals, clear narration, and often animated elements to break down information into digestible parts, making it accessible to the audience. 

Conference recording: long-form event coverage videos document events in their entirety or in significant segments, providing a comprehensive view of the proceedings. These videos capture the atmosphere, key speeches, presentations, panel discussions, and other important moments of the event. They are highly produced and have pressure put on them due to the real-time nature of what is happening.

Self-filmed material / montages: compilations based on self-submitted videos edited together, often quite emotive and used to convey strong feelings – usually supporting a wider message, initiative or event. Can also be lighter in tone and more fun-oriented.

Animation-based: any content that has a heavy reliance on text, images, animations - can include QR codes or links to encourage further engagement. These often use clear and direct language to convey key points quickly and designed to be understood without audio.
