Fujifilm setup guide for video

3/1/2025

I have been shooting on Fujifilm cameras since 2020, both across video and photography. Below is an exhaustive setup guide for shooting video alongside taking photos that I like to use as a point of reference.

IMAGE menu:
  • Image size: L 3:2
  • IQ: Fine + RAW
  • RAW recording: lossless compressed
  • JPEG/HEIF: JPEG
  • Film simulation: Nostalgic Negative
  • Grain effect: OFF
  • Color chrome: OFF
  • WB: AUTO - Ambience (change depending on shoot)
  • DR: DR100
  • Tone: H+1 S-1
  • Color: -2
  • Sharpness: 0

SHOOTING menu:
  • Shutter type (flash): MS - use this when connecting a Flash
  • Shutter type (photos): EF + M
  • Zebra setting - OFF (I prefer the histogram)
  • Movie optimised control - OFF, as this is the touch screen setting. I have found it interferes when moving on a busy shoot with my hand or accessories touching the screen by mistake
  • Rec frame indicator - ON, this is the red frame around the image when the camera is in recording mode
  • Shoot without lens - ON (you need this if shooting with manual or cine lenses)
  • Shoot without card - OFF (you do not want to be shooting without anything in the camera)

MOVIE menu (varies depending on model):
  • Shooting mode - MANUAL (avoid the PASM modes like A, P, etc.)
  • High speed recording - OFF (this is only for shooting slow motion)
  • Media recording setting - I usually set this to 1 > 2 for continuous shooting, this won’t work if shooting in a codec that needs a CFExpress card (ProRes) along with a standard SD card
  • HDMI output setting - ON if not shooting RAW
  • HDMI output setting - RAW output setting if using an Atomos recorder for example, I use 6.2K at 24p, make sure you match this setting on you recorder or you will get jitters
  • Data level setting - VIDEO, I have heard "full" causes issues in post-production
  • Flickerless Shutter Speed - OFF, I prefer manual control on corrective elements (NR, etc.)

AUDIO menu (varies depending on model):
  • Internal mic level adjustment - OFF / 0 db
  • External mic level adjustment - ON / -9DB
  • Mic jack setting - MIC
  • Mic level limiter - ON (avoids peaking)
  • Wind filter - OFF
  • Low cut filter - OFF
  • Headphones volume - 7

AF/MF menu (varies depending on model):
  • Focus mode - AF-C in video, AF-S in stills
  • AF point display - ON
  • AF mode - ALL / ZONE
  • AF-C custom setting - tracking sensitivity 2 / AF speed 0 (personal preference)
  • Face eye detection setting - EYE (right priority)
  • Wrap focus point - enable
  • Pre-AF: ON
  • Number of focus points - max
  • AF + MF - ON (allows you to adjust focus manually with AF)
  • Subject detection setting - OFF
  • MF assist - PEAK, RED, HIGH
  • Focus check - ON
  • Touch screen mode - enables touch focus, I usually disable this due to interference when moving around on a busy shoot but it would be handy for fast-moving subjects

USER settings:
  • Sound setup - AF beep OFF
  • Screen setup:
    • image dis. - 1.5s
    • FLOG view assist - ON - turns on the camera LUT to preview final look after LOG
  • Display custom setting (info on your display):
    • Focus frame / Histogram / Shooting mode
    • Aperture / shutter speed and ISO / Focus mode
    • White balance / Film simulation
    • Frames remaining / Image size / quality
    • Movie mode and rec time
    • Mic level / Battery level
    • No memory card warning
  • Button dial setting (varies depending on model):
    • Shutter speed back dial (right)
    • Aperture front dial
    • ISO left dial
  • Power management:
    • Auto power off - OFF (this setting causes issues if you are recording RAW)
    • Performance - normal

MY MENU settings:
  • Custom mode setting
  • Film simulation
  • White balance
  • AF mode
  • AF-C custom settings
