Canon C70 & Fujifilm Setup

This is the working configuration I've landed on for my three-camera documentary and interview setup. Everything below reflects how I've actually configured these cameras. From codec choices, log profiles, AF modes, to timecode. Primarily a reference for myself, but if you're running a similar hybrid multicam rig it might save you a few hours in menus.

The Kit

A-Cam — Canon EOS C70

  • Canon 28-70mm f/2.8 L + Neewer Black Diffusion 1/8 filter

  • Slot A: 128GB Lexar V90 (approx. 40 mins at 410Mbps)

  • Slot B: 64GB Lexar V90 — relay / proxy

B-Cam — Fujifilm X-H2S

  • Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 + Neewer Black Diffusion 1/8 filter

  • Lexar CFExpress Type B 512GB + Transcend 64GB V90 (approx. 1hr 45mins)

C-Cam — Fujifilm X-S20

  • Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 + Tiffen 82mm Black Pro Mist 1/8

  • Lexar 128GB V60 II (approx. 46 mins)

Power note: the C70 cannot be powered via V-Lock directly. A D-tap to LP-E6 dummy battery cable solves this cleanly for around £20.

Canon EOS C70

Set system frequency to 24.00Hz first — it's a top-level setting that gates everything else.

Recording

  • System Frequency: 24.00 Hz

  • Codec: XF-AVC 4K DCI All-Intra / 10-bit 4:2:2 / 410 Mbps

  • Slot B Function: Relay Recording

  • Volume Label: Canon + Metadata

Colour

  • Log Profile: Canon Log 2 / Cinema Gamut

  • White Balance: 5600K fixed — never auto

  • Monitor LUT: Custom BT.709 LUT assigned to LCD only, not baked into the recorded file

Loading a Custom LUT

Format an SD card in-camera. Place the .cube file in the root directory — no subfolders. Insert into Slot B only (Slot A will not work for LUT registration). Navigate to Menu → CP tab → select an unprotected profile → Edit File → Look File Setup → Register → select LUT → Conform to Custom Picture → confirm. To monitor without baking in: assign LUT: LCD to a function button via the Quick menu. To bake in permanently: CP menu → Look File → Enable.

Autofocus

  • Mode: Continuous / Face Detection + Tracking

  • AF Response: +1

  • Eye Detection: On

  • Head Detection: Detect from Face / Head

Audio

  • CH1/CH2: MIC terminal (Wireless GO II receiver)

  • CH3/CH4: MIC terminal — levels at 25

  • Monitor: CH1/CH2 / headphone volume 8

  • Limiter: Off — peaks set manually at -12dB

General

  • Fan: Automatic / Low

  • Front Dial: Iris / Back Dial: Shutter Speed

  • Digital IS: Off

Backing Up Settings

Menu → System Setup (Wrench icon) → Transfer Menu CP → save to SD Card B. Do this before every shoot day.

Fujifilm X-H2S & X-S20

Both cameras run identical log and codec settings. The X-H2S has Free Run timecode and a higher bitrate ceiling. The X-S20 is Rec Run only — sync it via clapper and Resolve's audio waveform match.

Recording — Both

  • Resolution: DCI 4K 4096×2160 / 17:9

  • Frame Rate: 23.976P

  • Codec: MOV H.265 All-Intra / 10-bit 4:2:2

  • Log Profile: F-Log2 / F-Gamut

  • White Balance: 5600K fixed

  • X-H2S Bit Rate: 720 Mbps / X-S20 Bit Rate: 360 Mbps

  • Data Level: Video / IS Mode: IBIS/OIS (Off on tripod) / IS Boost: Off

Colour

  • F-Log2 Sharpness: -4 / High ISO NR: Off / All other options: Off

  • View Assist: F-Log View Assist ON (monitor only)

  • Path: Menu → Setup (Wrench) → Screen Set-up → F-Log View Assist → ON

Autofocus — Both

  • Mode: Continuous / Wide Tracking

  • AF Speed: 0 / AF Sensitivity: 4

  • Face/Eye Detect: On — Eye priority, Right

  • MF Assist: Peak (Red, High)

Audio — Both

  • External Mic Level: -15dB / Mic Jack: MIC (no plug-in power)

  • Limiter: On / Wind & Low Cut: Off / Headphone Volume: 7

Timecode

  • X-H2S: TC Display On / Free Run / Drop Frame Off

  • X-S20: Rec Run only — use clapper for sync, align via Resolve audio waveform

Multicam Sync Workflow

Lock white balance to 5600K on all three cameras before rolling. Set C70 and X-H2S to Free Run timecode. Start all three recording simultaneously and perform one clean hand clap visible to all cameras.

In DaVinci Resolve: set project to DaVinci Wide Gamut / DaVinci Intermediate. Input transform for C70: Canon Log 2 / Cinema Gamut. Input transform for Fujis: F-Log2 / F-Gamut. Use Auto Sync Audio (waveform) for X-S20 where timecode is unreliable.
